EU Imposes Sanctions on Israeli Settlers and Hamas Leaders Amid Rising Tensions

Key Points:

  • The EU approved sanctions against Israeli settlers and Hamas leaders.
  • The measures target individuals and organizations linked to violence.
  • Hungary’s earlier opposition to the sanctions was removed after political changes.
  • Israeli officials strongly criticized the EU’s decision.
  • The sanctions include possible travel bans and asset freezes.

EU Approves Sanctions on Israeli Settlers and Hamas Leaders

The European Union has agreed to impose new sanctions on Israeli settlers accused of violence in the occupied West Bank as well as senior Hamas figures, marking a significant shift in the bloc’s Middle East policy.

EU foreign ministers reached the agreement during a meeting in Brussels, where member states discussed the worsening humanitarian and security situation in Gaza and the West Bank.

Sanctions Target Violence and Extremism

According to reports, the sanctions package targets several Israeli settlers, settler organizations, and Hamas-linked individuals accused of involvement in violence and extremist activities. The measures are expected to include travel bans, asset freezes, and financial restrictions.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said the bloc needed to move from “deadlock to delivery,” stressing that extremism and violence must have consequences.

Hungary’s Veto No Longer Blocking Action

The sanctions had reportedly been delayed for months due to opposition from Hungary’s former government under Viktor Orbán. However, after political changes in Hungary and the appointment of Péter Magyar, the veto was lifted, allowing the EU to finalize the measures.

Analysts say the development reflects growing pressure within Europe to respond more strongly to violence in the region.

Israel Criticizes EU Decision

Israeli officials condemned the sanctions, calling them politically motivated and unfair. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar argued that the EU was unfairly targeting Israeli citizens while drawing comparisons between settlers and Hamas members.

Meanwhile, Hamas representatives also criticized the sanctions, accusing the EU of political bias and double standards.

Short Summary:

The European Union has approved sanctions against Israeli settlers linked to West Bank violence and senior Hamas figures. The move follows months of delays caused by Hungary’s earlier opposition and has sparked criticism from both Israeli officials and Hamas representatives.
